  • Dimepiece & Foundwell teamed up with Timex to reissue the John F. Kennedy Jr.-famed 1995 Intrepid watch.
  • Timex’s initial reissue was faithful to the original at 46mm, but this new Dimepiece Edition sequel is 36mm.
  • New size, new cream dial, new purple Indiglo pusher, new timing bezel, same price – US$239.

Watch brands typically come up with interesting novelties each year, some better than others, but it can be valuable for brands to tap into creators within the watch space for spicy ideas they likely would not have realised without such a collaboration. Brynn Wallner, a.k.a Dimepiece, has certainly brought a new, fresh perspective to the watch landscape, and peering through her distinct lens nets some refreshing ideas. Timex recognised this, teaming up with Brynn and Alan Bedwell of Foundwell to create the Intrepid x Dimepiece Edition.

This new edition is not the first outing; it is actually a remixed sequel with an emphasis on bringing the concept to a broader spectrum of wrists. The initial collaboration Brynn, Alan, and Timex introduced was a reissue of an Intrepid watch from 1995. This reissue was very faithful to the original, matching its original, large case diameter of 46mm – an intimidating diameter for even above-average-sized wrists. The concept was born after Brynn spotted John F. Kennedy Jr. wearing the watch in photographs.

“Part of my job with Dimepiece is ‘celebrity watch spotting.’ So… One day, I’d spent hours combing through archival photos of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Besette Kennedy (as one does) and stumbled upon a photo of John John in what looked to be a diving watch,” Brynn explains. “I immediately sent it to Alan Bedwell, and he not only identified it as a Timex, but suggested we send it to the brand to explore the conversation of relaunching it.”

Timex 1995 reissue versus 36mm
L-R: the original 1995 reissue versus the smaller, more playful Dimepiece edition.

After the success of the 1995 reissue, Brynn and Timex went back to the drawing board to create a more “gender-neutral” version of the watch with a more compact size. This mission led the collaborators to land on a 36mm case, shrinking it down from the original 46mm. No longer true to its original size, there was no reason to try and make everything else as 1:1 as possible to the model JFK Jr. wore, like they did with the first Intrepid 1995 reissue.

With that in mind, this second, more compact outing has opted for a cream dial instead of white, and introduced purple for the central seconds hand, the 12 o’clock hour index, and Indiglo backlight pusher as a nod to Dimepiece’s signature purple colour. The Indiglo illumination is purple, too. The last notable switch-up is a deviation from the original logarithmic slide rule bezel to a more familiar and straightforward timing bezel you find on most dive watches. Beyond that, and some subtle elements like the sloped outer minutes track, the design framework is largely the same.

With a few warm, summer months remaining (at least in the Northern Hemisphere – my Aussie colleagues are just starting to get their warmer weather!) the Timex Intrepid x Dimepiece Edition stands to be a fun addition to a collection eager for a stylish and comfortable daily beater that can be bought without breaking the bank. The stainless steel case is 100 metres water-resistant, so certainly up to the task in that regard, though it does have a mineral crystal you should try to avoid smashing into a doorknob. That being said, such a concession, if it should even be called that, along with a quartz movement, allows the offering to be just US$239.
