G-Crocs? Casio and Crocs team up on a pair of clogs you can mount a CasiOak to

The Casio G-Shock has long been prized for its aesthetics as well as its durability: for a period during the 2000s, G-Shocks were the horological fashion statement of choice, especially for celebrities like Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. They were unadulterated ‘ugly-chic’: colourful, large, maximalist and yet affordable, anyone could rock a G-Shock. Another ugly-chic fashion phenomenon that took off during the 2000s was Crocs. Beloved and reviled in equal measure, these lairy foam clogs were unavoidable in the 00s, and while Crocs have pivoted towards streetwear designs in recent years, their goofiness is still definitely part of their charm.

That’s why it kind of makes sense to hear that G-Shock and Crocs have collaborated on a pair of clogs that you can mount a watch on – and I’m not sure if they’re brilliant or totally goofy.

This Crocs x G-Shock collab comes as a bundle of a pair of glow-in-the-dark Crocs Echo Wave – a more streetwear-inspired take on the Crocs formula that more closely resembles a traditional pair of sneakers – combined with a unique GA-2100 ‘CasiOak‘ G-Shock design. Like the Echo Waves included in this package, the dial of this CasiOak glows in the dark, features the Crocs logo at 12 o’clock and has a marble pattern on its strap that matches the shoes’ lining and strap. Otherwise, it’s functionally identical to your average CasiOak.

This is where the novelty comes in. This CasiOak model has a quick-release strap, and the Crocs have a special modular watch case that connects to a rivet system on the side of the shoes. The idea is that you can take the strap off and slip the watch head into this case, so you can wear your watch on your feet. Casio explains that this “redefines how and where a watch can be worn”.

Is this particularly practical? No. Is it even that fashionable? Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder… I would say that of any watch, a G-Shock is best suited to be mounted to one’s foot, as it’s tough enough to put up with any sort of abuse. You wouldn’t have to worry about destroying your watch if you rolled your ankle or kicked a football or something.

Look, let’s be real here: part of the appeal of Crocs and, to an extent, many G-Shocks is that they’re not subtle. They’re intentionally a little bit ridiculous; a bit of a style statement, so this is entirely on-brand for both brands. G-Shock has become part of streetwear culture in no small part because Casio has penned collaborations with influencers and fashion labels, from BAPE and Nike’s Jordan Brand to Takashi Murakami and Eminem. Crocs is just the natural (and very comfortable) next step.
