Tusenö’s SuperVintage offers a fresh new blend of old-school looks
Time+TideSwedish brand Tusenö has made a bold move: it’s departed from the sports watch genre it excels at and has jumped into the vintage genre with great intensity. After the successful releases of the Shellback V1 and V2, as well as the Windseeker V1 and V2, the SuperVintage might be a different beast aesthetically, but it is endowed with the same level of refinement and attention to detail in design and mechanical departments as the other two models. It looks familiar, although it doesn’t look like anything else we’ve seen before. It’s as if Tusenö have reissued a vintage model that never existed, resolutely built for the modern enthusiast whilst truly looking like it was designed half a century ago. Unlike actual vintage pieces, you won’t have to be careful with the SuperVintage because it is made of the good stuff.
The case
The first and most important visual trait of the Tusenö SuperVintage is its oblong, curvaceous case. Free of any angles or sharp edges, it is shaped akin to the most elegant and smoothest of pebbles, designed by a human hand but forged by nature over a millennium. It was designed to showcase a double curvature, as it slopes down from the sides (at the 3 and 9) to the farthest edges of the case (at the 12 and 6) as well as above the lugs, smoothly bending down towards their centre in a continuous curve free of interruptions.
The roundness of the case is accentuated by the fully polished treatment of the latter and the fact that it flows down towards the screwed-down caseback, the latter being made of a piece of sapphire circled by a concave ring that holds it in place. The case is designed in such a way that it appears like a shiny and smooth monolith with no flanks, bezel, or lugs.
Because of its design and modest dimensions of 34,5mm in diameter, 40.5mm lug-to-lug, and 8.7mm in height, the Tusenö SuperVintage wears extremely well and is light on the wrist, although it commands a contradictory strong wrist presence on account of the singular shape of its case. It is pictured here on a 6.5”/16.5cm wrist and appears larger than it actually is on paper as it is all case and no lugs, and because the fully polished treatment of the double-curved body of 316L stainless steel follows the natural contour of the wrist – wide and round flanks against which the skin slides and turns and which are located above the wristbone.
The bespoke, shaped case is paired with an equally bespoke shaped crystal made of sapphire and complemented by several layers of anti-reflective coating, as well as a small push/pull crown shaped like a button wrapped by a thin rope detail, presenting an angled grip for easy operation.
The dial
The Tusenö SuperVintage was inspired by the golden era of dress watches – the types of watches you’d wear whilst sipping on a classy cocktail. Hence the three dial variants coming in three distinct colours and each being named after a drink: the Mojito and its fresh minty green dial and frosted center section mimicking crushed mint and ice; the Espresso Martini, endowed with a rich brown color scheme and textured center section representing creamy foam; and the Negroni, with its intense red color and texture echoing the density of the cocktail being poured over ice.
Each variant of the SuperVintage comes with two main complementary colours which are separated from one another by the centre portion of the dial, oblong as well, but appearing more in the shape of a perfectly formed egg. The dials are therefore in the shape of the case and bezel, a continuity that is interrupted by the polished and domed leaf hour and minute hands.
The latter are exceptionally designed and made, and perfectly proportioned so that the hour hand revolves within the egg-shaped centre portion of the dial whilst the minute hand floats above the hour markers and aligns with the railroad minute track printed on the farthest edges of the dial. On each variant of the SuperVintage, the centre section is framed by a painted border to which are attached the slanted, vintage-looking, and slightly stylised Arabic numerals, which may remind you of 1970s Californian logotypes.
Everything about the Tusenö SuperVintage is intense and familiar and singular all at the same time. Moreover, the intricate interplay of textures on the various sectors of the dial is quite mesmerising, and each dial comes with its own construction. For instance, the Mojito version is complemented by a sunburst effect found on the sub-seconds register and outer portion of the dial. Bonus points to Tusenö for having decorated each pinion with small chamfered caps!
The strap
Often, when a brand goes out of its way to create a whole new design, it generally puts as much effort into the design and manufacturing of the strap, which is the case here. Coming in two lengths and two colours for each model, the thin and soft Italian leather straps are equipped with quick-release spring bars, matching oval-shaped buckles, and measure 18mm at the lugs and taper to 14mm.
The movement
Moreover, Tusenö didn’t skimp on things when choosing which movement to equip its newest creation with. It opted for a top-grade manual-winding ETA 7001, which runs at 4Hz and comes with 42 hours of power reserve, blued screws and côtes de Genève finishing.
