Oris continues its annual tradition with a luminous twist for 2025’s Hölstein Edition
Tom Austin- For the sixth year running, Oris has unveiled its a special Hölstein Edition watch to commemorate the registration of the company on June 1st, 1904.
- Limited to 250 individually numbered pieces, 2025’s Hölstein Edition takes the form of a special no-date ProPilot, coated in black DLC with a fully-lumed dial.
- This special edition watch seemingly features just a plain white dial with Arabic numerals, but when fully illuminated, it reveals a hidden secret glowing in the dark – the Oris teddy bear.
Swiss watch brands are, of course, generally proud of their heritage, but they also take pleasure in celebrating the towns and regions where they are based. Usually, this is because, if they’ve been around for long enough, there’s a good chance their company has had an enormous impact on the local community, with generations of families working for them over the decades. One such town is Hölstein, nestled in the wooded lower slopes of the Swiss Jura Mountains, and the birthplace of Oris some 120 years ago.
Six years ago, Oris began a tradition of celebrating the founding of their company in that very town, on June 1st, 1904, with the Hölstein Editions collection. Since then, every year on June 1st, they’ve revealed a special edition watch, each being a limited run with a fun or quirky twist, not confined to the limitations of the usual commercial constraints. This year, Oris has let their hair down once more and unveiled its latest commemorative Hölstein Edition piece, a very special no-date ProPilot with a hidden party trick.
Continuing on the theme of last year’s blacked-out Diver’s Sixty-Five, the Hölstein Edition 2025 is treated to the same stealthy black DLC (diamond-like coating) finish on the case. This time around, the model in focus is the brilliant Big Crown ProPilot, which, for the first time, is seen in a no-date configuration.
At 41mm in diameter, it’s a hefty-sized pilot’s watch, which is fine; however, the 11.9mm thickness really lends it some very wearable proportions. That, along with a lug-to-lug of 49mm, means it sits in that Goldilocks region for well-proportioned watches. The DLC-plated case remains stainless steel and features a 100-meter water resistance rating thanks to a screw-down crown, a domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and a screw-down exhibition sapphire case back.
The dial is unlike anything else in the ProPilot range, and while Oris has recently been busy creating watches with fun dials, such as their latest Pointer Date collection, at first glance, this Hölstein Edition 2025 appears incredibly legible as a tool watch, yet it could be said to be somewhat dull in comparison. Well, like a lot of things in the watch space, you have to look a little closer.
The dial isn’t really just plain white; it’s fully coated in white Super-LumiNova, meaning that when the lights go out, the whole thing lights up against the contrasting black hands and Arabic numerals in a luminous, vibrant green. Look a little closer, and the Hölstein Edition connection becomes clear, as Oris Bear, the brand’s cuddly mascot, appears between 3 and 4 o’clock on the dial. It’s a playful touch, and something we love as watch collectors – something that isn’t obvious at first, but only appears when you delve a bit deeper.
Powering the watch is the Oris Calibre 400, an automatic movement we’ve seen in other Oris special editions, such as the Coulson Limited Edition BigCrown ProPilot released in 2022. In this year’s Hölstein Edition, the date function is lost, but it retains its whopping 120-hour power reserve, along with -3/+5 seconds per day accuracy, enhanced anti-magnetic properties, a recommended service interval of 10 years, and an accompanying 10-year warranty. That’s a strong spec sheet for a watch like this, and to be honest, I prefer the no-date configuration.
Finishing the 2025 Hölstein Edition is a stealthy black textile strap, complete with a black DLC-coated folding clasp. It’s leather-lined to remain comfortable to wear, but it offers a military-esque, utilitarian look that suits the blacked-out style. This new release is limited to just 250 pieces, each of which receives an edition number engraved on the case back, which, by the way, also features a cool ring of lume that lights up in the dark. If previous Hölstein Editions are anything to go by, it’s certain that these won’t last long among Oris fans and collectors, especially with that special dial.
