There is something to be said for a summer watch. The levity, joy, and carefree attitude they bring to your wrist and day is unmatched, and I think Tudor may have just released the watch of the summer with the new Black Bay 54 Lagoon Blue. With a cool blue dial that has a never-before-seen sand texture to it and a mirror-polished stainless steel bezel, this watch feels completely different to the tool-like original 54 that is based on the watch chosen by the French and US navies to take into battle.

Let’s dive into the details on this and what makes it such an exciting new addition to the Tudor line up. We are starting to get used to seeing Tudor produce colourful dials at this point. Whether it’s Flamingo Blue, Pink, or VCARB Blue, it’s getting more and more daring and branching out from its tool roots. So when we see an ice blue dial colour with a rich sand-like texture applied to it, it makes more sense inside the Tudor universe. This watch even finds itself inside Tudor’s new Daring Watches family, suggesting it might be harder to get hold of than the rest of the catalogue.

While this watch has an incredibly modern feel to it, there are references in the Tudor archives which provide a precedence for the polished steel bezel. You only need go back to the 1990s to find examples of Oyster Prince Submariners that came with very similar bezels, although instead of the markings being engraved in a tone-on-tone look as they are are with this new 54, they were more often finished in a high contrast black.

When you combine this mirror-polished bezel with the five-link bracelet – the only strap option available for this model – it makes this watch feel far more dressy than the all black, three-link rivet-style bracelet we are used to seeing on this model. And I’m a big fan of this new aesthetic. It makes it feel like it would be more at home at a beach club, rather than over a wetsuit.

Beyond these changes, everything else that we know and love about the 54 has stayed the same here. With the dimensions of the case sticking to 37mm across, 11.2mm thick, and 46mm lug-to-lug, and able to withstand 200m of water resistance, although I would imagine this watch feeling more at home fending off spilled drinks and the occasional dip in the pool rather than deep sea water.

We also retain the manufacture calibre MT5400 that is fully COSC certified inside the Tudor manufacture that gives the watch 70 hours of power reserve. What more could you ask for from a summer watch that can hold its own by the pool, at the beach, and at dinner afterwards.
