Rado gives the Anatom a citrus blast for their latest summer release
Tom Austin- Rado announces a trio of citrus-infused Anatom models for summer, available in 3 zesty colours: Grapefruit Red, Lemon Yellow and Lime Green.
- The three colour options are spread across all three dials in a fade-to-black gradient, and are paired with punchy colour-matched rubber straps.
- Masters of high-tech materials, Rado has combined a black PVD-coated stainless steel case with a highly polished black ceramic bezel for a futuristic look.
Well, it’s safe to say summer is definitely here (in the Northern Hemisphere at least), as watch brands begin to unveil their latest tropical-toned watches for the best season of the year. Hot on the heels of their two-tone grey and gold model from a few months back, Rado has doubled down on the Anatom for summer, with a trio of eye-popping models to bring in the summer vibes. This retrofuturistic model is a Rado icon, introduced initially in 1983, and it quickly became one of the staples in Rado’s DiaStar collection and helped form the brand into what it is today. Forty years later, the Anatom appeared once more, refined and re-shaped for modern wrists, and was upgraded with Rado’s signature ceramics, known for their epic scratch-resisting performance.
Now, Rado has treated the Anatom to a fresh set of clothes for summer. The head of the watch remains consistent with the rest of the range, featuring a stainless steel inner structure plated with a sandblasted black PVD coating. This is wrapped with a highly polished black ceramic bezel, which covers the top and bottom front-facing areas of the watch and wraps around the flanks of the case. The shape of the case is completed by the cylindrical sapphire crystal, giving the watch a consistent flow around the wrist.
The overall dimensions remain unchanged, too, at 32.5mm wide, 46.3mm lug-to-lug and 11.3mm thick. These numbers may lead you to think that it’s a relatively small watch, but the integrated design of the case and strap makes the watch wear a little larger than the dimensions suggest. The ceramic crown and exhibition caseback offer just 50 meters of water resistance, and what you can get up to with this kind of rating is up for debate, so despite the rubber strap teasing swimming pool frivolity, you might want to be a little more cautious with the Anatom in the water.
There are three dial variations for this new release, again mimicking the current models with a pronounced fumé effect, but this time the central colours of the dial are much more vibrant than before. Available in a blushing Grapefruit Red, a zesty Lime Green, or a citrusy Lemon Yellow, each dial is chosen to depict themes of summertime, such as lush green grass lawns, sandy beaches, or a juicy grapefruit breakfast on a summer morning. Of course, these descriptions are all rather florid, but that aside, they do indeed look fantastic in their own right.
The black edges of the dial blend seamlessly into the black ceramic bezel, unifying the design, which is accentuated by brightly polished applied hour markers filled with white Super-LumiNova. The short, polished hands are rhodium-plated and also feature a flash of lume for some nighttime legibility. The dial text is minimal, and the date window is subtly placed at 6 o’clock, thankfully with a dial-matching black background as well. One final touch is the floating anchor logo at 12, which rotates in the same way as the rotor in the movement.
Flip the watch over, and you’ll find the inspiration for that little Easter egg: the anchor-shaped rotor, fitted to the Rado calibre R766 automatic movement. Upgraded from its off-the-shelf configuration, the movement is based on the ETA 2892, a slimline self-winding calibre that is found in several high-profile brands’ watches. As far as upgrades go, the power reserve has been increased to a substantial 72 hours, alongside some simple industrial finishing techniques, such as sunburst brushing on the bridges, and, of course, the bespoke, anchor-shaped Rado rotor. The beat rate has also been slightly reduced from 4Hz to 3.5Hz, which may have helped support the beefed-up power reserve.
Each watch comes with a rubber strap in a colour to match the dial, and it’s good to see that the colours match perfectly, as well as the profile of the strap, which complements the style and look of the full bracelet version of the watch. The strap arrives finished with a brushed stainless steel 3-fold clasp, and a black ceramic cover, along with stainless steel pushers on either side to allow for quick changes. The vibrant straps are a welcome addition that brightens the watch up for summer and completes the overall look.
