Christopher Ward brings the summer heat with the new C60 Trident Reef

We’ve already had a host of summery watches launch this year. Whether it’s Norqain reminding you to have an ice cream, Hublot bringing some heat with micro-blasted ceramic, or Tudor blinding us with polished bezels, the feeling of summer being in the air of the watch industry is undeniable. Now, Christopher Ward has decided it’s time to join the beach party with new additions to its tried and tested diver line with the new C60 Trident Reef.

What I particularly like about this expansion of the C60 Trident is that Christopher Ward is trying something new: not only are we getting novel colour combinations, but we are now getting these designs in both 41mm and 44mm case sizes, this being the first time a C60 Trident has come in 44mm. To me, this shows that Ward is unafraid to make what the customers are asking for, instead of listening to trend forecasters who all say that smaller is the way to go, when in reality, there are still a lot of people out there who like a bigger watch. Putting aside the watch size debate for now, offering these options straight out of the gate is a great move in anticipating client needs.

Let’s take a look at the five vibrant colour options we have here. We have Chalice Yellow (green dial), Galaxea Black, Tuba Orange, Acro White, and Helio Blue. These specific hues have been pulled directly from a Franco-Croatian paper artist called Ana Brecevic, who has created wonderful reef-scapes out of cut and folded paper. The fragility of her work speaks to just how fragile our current coral reefs are, which is why Christopher Ward is continuing its commitment to donate 2% of every sale in the C60 Trident line directly to the Blue Marine Foundation.

These dials are super deep and multi-layered with solid X1 Super-LumiNova applied markers, an applied chapter ring, and a semi-transparent lacquer across the dial that matches the colour of the base beneath. All of these dials have contrasting minute hands to aid visibility and a 120-click bezel that matches the dial colour. Inside these watches, they stay the same as previous models with the Sellita SW200-1, a widely used automatic movement that can be seen through the display caseback. This choice in movement also helps to keep the final price down, meaning you can get hold of a dive watch with a legit 200m water resistance for under £700.

Any of these watches can be bought with an FKM Aquaflex rubber strap in a colour that complements your dial choice, or a three-link bracelet that comes with an easy-to-use micro-adjustment system in the clasp. So, there are a lot of choices you have to make when choosing which of these watches you want. First of all, which size? 41mm or 44mm? Then which colour? There are five to choose from. And finally, do you want it on a rubber strap or a bracelet? Christopher Ward is demonstrating how you can offer something for everyone.
