Tudor gears up for the Tour de France with a new limited edition Pelagos FXD Chrono

Russell Sheldrake
  • Tudor celebrates the world’s most famous cycling race with a limited edition take on its Pelagos FXD Chrono.
  • Its yellow highlights nod to the Tour de France’s famous yellow jersey, as worn by the leader of the general classification in the race.
  • A limited edition of 300 individually numbered pieces, it features a caseback engraved with a cycling peloton.

As you may know by now, Tudor currently owns a professional cycling team, and it has released previous versions of this watch to mark the start of the historic Giro d’Italia. But now we are approaching the beginning of perhaps the most famous cycling race in the world, the Tour de France, and Tudor has brought us another limited run of its specialist cycling watch with some Easter eggs in there for those who love the sport. For those who have really been paying attention, this feels like it is building on the momentum for the other sporting editions the brand has brought out recently, like in the worlds of Formula 1 or football.

The latest edition of the Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono “Yellow” includes yellow highlights to link to the Tudor Pro Cycling team leader, Fabian Cancellara, who in his career as a pro cyclist spent 29 days in the yellow jersey as the leader of the Tour de France, and after retiring form the sport back in 2016, now finds himself shepherding this young team into what promises to be one of their toughest challenges yet. These yellow accents include the tachymeter scale, which spirals around the outside of the dial, extending beyond a normal scale, allowing someone on their bike the ability to measure their average speed all the way down to 20 units per hour.

We also have yellow sub-dial printing and a strip of yellow down the middle of the one-piece technical fabric strap, which passes straight through this model’s characteristic fixed lugs. The watches are individually numbered up to 300, although you won’t find number 7 anywhere as that will be firmly on Cancellara’s wrist during the Tour – and for many years after – as that was his signature number.

Everything else about this watch stays true to the original design, with its 43mm matte black carbon composite case keeping it light. As anyone who cycles regularly will tell you, weight is one of the most important factors if you want to go fast. Inside is the manufacture calibre MT5813 that is fully COSC-certified with a power reserve of 70 hours. The hour markers are made from solid blocks of luminescent ceramic composite, which give great depth and a long-lasting glow for those nighttime rides, or when you are heading through an alpine tunnel.
