Norqain skeletonises and downsizes the Independence, making it a steel cousin of the Wild One

  • Norqain’s new Independence Skeleton 40mm is available in brushed and polished steel, or optional DLC coating.
  • The mostly monochromatic dials are accented with pops of turquoise or orange on the seconds hand and text signifying their COSC certification.
  • Sharing the Sellita-based movements with the rest of the brand’s skeletonised offering, the new Independence Skeleton 40mm starts at £3,440.

We’ve been fans of Norqain for a while. Whether it’s the Wild One Turquoise that Andrew can’t get off his wrist, having fun designing custom pieces in Geneva, or travelling up to Manchester with them to watch Soccer Aid, we have followed this young brand every step of the way. So, to see them expand one of their most popular collections with by adding a skeletonised version of the Independence 40mm in both steel and black DLC is wonderful, and logical, to see.

Norqain is renowned for its skeletonised watches, with the Wild One Skeleton being perhaps the most recognisable model they produce, in part thanks to Mark Wahlberg wearing his constantly. The Independence Skeleton 40mm is in the same family as the Wild One, but with a few tweaks. While the Wild One has its characteristic rubber shock-absorbing system surrounding the case, the Independence is more traditional in being just steel. But that sporty case shape is kept, with dominant crown guards and a large bumper on the other side, giving protection and visual balance.

Before this new model was introduced, Norqain’s Independence line consisted of the Skeleton in 42mm, and a solid-dialled model in 40mm. This new line now bridges the gap between the two, offering the captivating look of the completely skeletonised movement, but in the more approachable size of 40mm, much like the new Wild One Skeleton 39mm.

And speaking of the movement, it’s the same one you’ll find across the brand’s skeletonised range. The NB08S is an airy variant of the ubiquitous Sellita SW200, with automatic winding, 41 hours of power reserve, and COSC certification.

The two models only differ in a couple of places, but give a completely different feel when compared to each other. The steel version keeps its sporty nature with brushing throughout the case, with small elements of polish adding contrast and definition. It also features small pops of turquoise on the seconds hand, and chronometer text printed on the glass. The DLC version goes much darker, making the anthracite movement appear even darker still. For this model’s contrast, Norqain chose pops of vibrant orange.

Both Independence Skeleton 40mm variants are available on the classic Norqain rubber strap that fits seamlessly against the case and has a grained texture on top. If you prefer bracelets, however, the steel version might be for you, as it can be option with a three-link number with polished centre links and brushed shoulders.
